We left on Sunday Aug 27, and returned home 1 day after the storm to find a community that I no longer recognized. Our home was destroyed. We left three days later with no real destination in mind. My brother in law called and told us to come to Chattanooga, we have been here ever since. We miss home very much, but have no where to stay down there at this time. Maybe one day we will find our way back, if that is where the Lord wants us to be. Thank you to any and all who have given of self, time and donations in this past year and time to come. The outpour of love, blessings, and prayers has been amazing. God is not finished with us yet!! Thank You ALL.....The Taylor Family |

Today I wrote our rent check for Oct. of $530., so now there is no more $ in our account. Fema wants blood to help us. I've done all I can w/them except suffer a nervous breakdown. Our elec. bill is $104. , but I got an extension til 10/30. Thank God for extra time. I make about $90. a month helping an 84 year old blind lady in our building. So we need advice on how we can survive. Maybe someone out there knows of some organization that I haven't thought of yet. My husband was working before Katrina, but his place of employment was under 12 ft. of water for 3 wks. We can't even find the people that still owe him back pay. SS says it could take 1 to 1 and a half yrs. to get his disability. |

Story ... What we still need to help rebuild:
I came to Tuscaloosa, AL a week prior to Katrina. My dad was the only family member that stayed for the storm. He was at our family owned hotel which flooded to the 2nd floor. My dad is a hero. He saved many lives on the day of Aug. 29th by carrying people upstairs, making sure no one was panicking, and lifting people over the railings to safety. He also let people stay at the hotel for shelter for about a month after the storm. He went out and found food and water for everyone and made sure everyone was okay. I didn't hear from my dad for over a week and I can't describe the feeling of not knowing if your dad is dead or alive. Every time I talk about my experience I tear up. Any help will be appreciated. God Bless! |

Story ... What we still need to help rebuild:
my experience was horrible i lost my job of 18yrs,my home of 20+ years and it appears that no one cared. i was away from my town for a month in a half staying from pillow to post because no hotels were available and even the shelters were full. i had little money that had to be used for gas, food, personal items and where i was lying my head and not only that to come home and lose most of what i had. the main things are my job and home. fema denied my claim on my house due to no insurance and that left me really depressed. after that i did get an apartment in Houston TX but looking for work was even harder. no one wanted to hire evacuees due to a stereo type of us. i have always worked and never depended on writing to get help, but i need it at this time. i needed a little bit more that 6.00 to pay bills and car note and try to get it runnable. it is in the process of playing out any day. so i know that i can find someone that is willing to help in any way possible. please anyone out there looking to adopt just me i would appreciate it. thanking in advance.. i am a self sufficient hurricane survivor that has had a hard time making it due to being by myself and being an evacuee. it has been hard to get a job and hard making it. i am in desperate need of minor car repairs from the storm that have been partially fixed but still not running properly and scared to be on the side of the road in this big city of where i have no friends. i need 1 rim and a set of tires. i just started a job and in need of professional clothing size 14. my shoe size is a 10. i am in the process of getting evicted due to fema does not want to pay and i just gotten a job so i needed extra time to save rent money. i need help with a 1 bedroom apartment. any monies can go directly to landlord. any help would be appreciated. household items are still needed as well. last Christmas was not a good one and i did not want to be on the streets for this years. |

Story ... What we still need to help rebuild:
We stayed through Katrina, because my youngest son wouldn't leave & I couldn't leave him. The only damage we had was bathroom & hall ceiling came down. My youngest son (who lives about a block from us)had everything come down around him. He was standing in his doorframe thinking he was going to die when a large piece of metal flew over him and knocked open a door in his complex on the 3rd floor across from him. It was a newly renovated apt. and that's where he ran to ride out the storm. We evacuated Tues. after the storm when the water receded enough for us to get out. We were gone almost a month. My youngest son ,Jason 24, lost everything. My husband and oldest son lost jobs. But, I thank God we're all alive & well, physically. But mentally and financially we are taking day by day, with alot of prayer. I want to thank everyone who has helped in any way. We paid our Oct. rent, so we know we have a home for at least another month. After that, it's in God's hands. Please pray for us! |

It was a very bad experience. I ended up in the shelter in Mississippi. It was very hot we had no food. My son was very sick from not getting in medicine. We were in a very sad place. We could not se what was going on at home. When we finally did get to go home. We went home to mold every where. We tried to clean up as much as we could but It is still every where. I cant move because I can not afford the EXTREMELY high rent. My sons doctor is wondering why he keeps getting sick. But I cant tell him that we live in mold because I feel like a very bad parent. Because I have no control over this situation. My son is trying very hard to finish school so he can graduate next year in may. But he has already been in the hospital once this year. I'm trying my hardest to help him but I feel helpless myself. Please help my family get through the hard times. Please help us over come the hardships that we are going through. |

Story ... What we still need to help rebuild:
The day hurricane Katrina hit, we were in our home. We lived about a mile from the back bay and still received 8 ft of water. We swam out of our home with our 5 month old daughter. It was an experience we will never forget. Since then, we have traveled many places but are now residing in a Fema trailer. I'm very grateful that my daughter will never remember having to go through Katrina but I will never forget. I'm 18 and since Katrina I've came a long way. I finished high school the months following Katrina and am now in college. Me and my fiancé', who is 21, give our 18 month-old daughter everything we possible can provide for her but every now and then we could use a little help. We've been through so much and we're still trying to get our lives back in order. The holidays last year weren't the best and we were happy to just have each other. I want this year to be better then last year and any help is appreciated. We lost everything in the storm, never to return to our home pre-Katrina but instead to a FEMA trailer. We were very fortunate to receive the 3bedroom mobile home so we're not cramped. Well thank you in advance to whomever may help us and God bless! |

She went upstate and stayed with relatives/ was given a fema trailer to put on my lot/ did not have enough insurance money to finish the house/ Help is direly needed to finish house/ roof is on, walls are up/ floors need to be put down/ laundry room not done/ painting needed/ any help in these areas would be GREATLY appreciated. Thank you. Came on a Katrina help site before and posted. Many many e-mail came with offers of help but all that was sent was counterfeit money orders, checks, and gift certificates. I had the bank check them out before I deposited, thank God I did. All offers had instructions to send money to another place after cashing. It would have left the bank account overdrawn on this end and all that owed by me. So beware of this. All of these were fake that were sent. I don't think anyone wanting to help, will ask to have money sent when they could easily do that themselves. That was why I was so leery and had it checked out first. The coast is deluded with these kinds of offers and our e-mail addresses were gotten from the Katrina Help site. This is my Mother. She is unable to handle thing and has asked me to do so for her. |

Story ... What we still need to help rebuild:
Because of my injuries I'm not able to drive more than 1 hour without being in pain. When we left Slidell we went to friends in D'IBERVILLE, MS who live north of I-10. They weren't staying though so we all went to North Wool market Elementary school where we rode the storm out. After the storm my 2 sons and I went to another friend in North Biloxi where we stayed until we heard news of the condition of our home from my dad, brothers. sister and brother-in-law. Our home had six feet of water and nothing was salvageable. I had already contacted FEMA and when I received the money I immediately started looking back in LA. but was unable to find anything. We ended up buying the mobile home we have now. Because of my medical condition and my sons handicaps I am currently in contact with Habitat for Humanity in hopes of coming back to LA. God has taken care of us and wherever He wants us to be I know will be good. |

Evacuation
Story ... What we still need to help rebuild:
On August 23rd we knew there was a storm coming through so we had just planned to go to a friends house north of I-10 because we lived a block from the beach. Well we went to sleep knowing our plans for the next day. Well we were awakened by a phone call Sunday morning by those friends telling us the storm took a turn for the worse and it was a category 5 coming to ms. We panicked. We had an okay car but not a car to get us anywhere and I had immediate family down here so we were trying to figure out how we were going to get out of here. Well my mom got her work van loaded me, my husband, son, 2 bro.,1 sis and herself and we left at around 2 or 3pm to go to Indiana. When we got to Indianapolis that Monday morning we watched the news and saw that our home MS was being destroyed. We could not leave Indianapolis until Friday. When we returned our home and my parents home was destroyed in different ways both were inhabitable and still are today. My mother and my siblings had to move to Indiana (which they moved back in June 06)and we went to California. but it was hard trying to find a permanent job for my husband so we lived out there for about 8 months and then we relocated back home to ms. we stayed in my fathers 1 bedroom fema trailer until we found an apartment. my brothers and sisters live between my apt and my dads fema trailer. We try to help each other as much as we can. |

Story ... What we still need to help rebuild:
I evacuated with my two small children the day before the storm with neighbors here to Memphis TN. I've been here ever since the apt. I was living in was total destroyed by the storm. Last year You helped me and my kids so much It was a blessing things are kind of rough right now. I am working a full time job but all of my money goes to bills and a babysitter. It would be a blessing if you would be able to help us out again. Thank you and God Bless. God Bless you for this site. |

Story ... What we still need to help rebuild:
we stayed with my grandparents instead of the original plan of going to va. with my husband's family b/c my grandparents went through hurricane Camille & were sure that Katrina wouldn't be "as bad" but whoa, was it...their home was already old enough to begin with, & it was horrible with all the things flying around & our small 1965 trailer got a serious beating. we thought that the chickens had all died, but fortunately, they were all smooshed in the cage together crammed like sardines, but luckily, still alive. my husband pulled the cage apart with them in it & they all went crazy running around the yard. poor little things. we still haven't gotten it all fixed yet even with the husband going back to work & all, but praise GOD that he has a job. after the storm was over, we took what gas we had in the car & got 3 vehicles of people together to try & find gas & made it all the way over to Florida b4 we found it finally. we got a pretty torn up place even still to the present day b/c the house is just too old to fix, not to mention after we had just put in new walls & windows, & had taken down the cabinets to be remodeled, but the hurricane changed that for us. we are striving to get a better place to live just as soon as we save the money up for it so the kids can have better like they deserve. GOD BLESS ALL!! GOD bless all the PEOPLE that help & for all the families that get adopted... THANKS SO MUCH!! |

Story ... What we still need to help rebuild:
i am putting this one in for my grandparents b/c they don't have a computer. they stayed during & after the storm not realizing that it would be quite that bad b/c they assumed that since hurricane Camille was such a tough one, there was no way that hurricane Katrina could be any worse, but, boy oh, boy, were they wrong. they got the roof blown off, sheds blown to pieces, metal shattered stuff all over the place. the whole floor was shaking during that storm. next time they will evacuate. they have said so themselves. GOD bless whomever helps my grandparents & thanks a bunch... any help with yard work would be greatly appreciated. they still have things all over the yard & no one has offered to help them out yet. GOD bless... |
