Evacuation Story ... What we still need to help rebuild:

We did not have to evacuate, but went to a brick house for shelter, most damage here was from winds up to 120 miles an hour, with some rainwater damage. The trailer leaks and leans now. FEMA says not enough damage for them to help.  My sister and her children have moved in for worry of mold growing in her house, making everyone there sick.  Things have been very hard with 8 people living in a 14x80 trailer.

We would just like for the children to have a Christmas this year, as since Katrina, they haven't had Christmas or Birthdays. Thank you, and Blessings to all.

Thanks to all those who help with the Katrina groups, boards, and keeping an eye out for us, and helping in so many ways.

Evacuation Story ... What we still need to help rebuild:

I had just gotten off from work at the hospital. When I had made it home at about 6:15a.m. I had just put my kids off to bed when, I went to take my shower my 8 year old daughter came and got me and said mom its wet in our room when I went to their room the water was gushing in like a river. I then moved them to the living room. The wind was so strong that it took the whole wall side in my room off of my house. Our house was flooding with water, the strong wind, and know way out. but we rode it out for about 15hours,by the grace of god. After the storm we had to move to the roof-top where we were stranded from Monday night of the storm, until Saturday afternoon with no food or water no change of clothing. We watched all our belongings just floated away.

Please help our family in whatever way you can we would definitely appreciate it, and god bless you and happy holidays to you and your family. Merry Christmas.

Evacuation Story ... What we still need to help rebuild:

We were fortunate to leave the city the sunday before the hurricane hit. My family and I drove to Atlanta to ride out the storm at my brothers house. We had no idea that anything like this could ever happen. We watched the news reports in a state of disbelief as this terrible tradgedy unfolded before our eyes. Not knowing the where family and friends were for days was unbearable. We're grateful that everyone was eventually found and were led to safety. The hard part about all this is the separation of family and friends. We are literally scattered all over the country. Thank God for His guidance and protection.

Whatever you can do for my family and I will be greatly appreciated.

Evacuation Story ... What we still need to help rebuild:

WE HAD OUR FIRST HOME IN DIBERVILLE MISSISSIPPI. IT WAS BOTH MY HUSBANDS AND MY DREAM BECAUSE WE BOTH CAME FROM BROKEN HOMES AND THIS WAS OUR HOME WE HAD WORKED FOR FOR YEARS. WE WENT TO OUR BROTHERS HOUSE FURTHER INLAND DURING THE STORM. THERE WERE SEVERAL TREES THAT FELL ON THE ROOF THERE, AND HIS HOUSE WAS SO DAMAGED THAT WE ALL HAD TO LEAVE AFTER THE STORM. WHEN WE RETURNED TO OUR HOUSE, WE FOUND THAT IT HAD BEEN TOTALLY UNDERWATER AND WE HAD LOST EVERYTHING. BECAUSE OUR MARRIAGE IS MIXED, A LOT OF MY FAMILY AND MY HUSBANDS DONT SPEAK TO US, SO THE ONLY FAMILY MEMBER THAT COULD HELP WAS MY NEICE LIVING IN PITTSBURG, PA. SHE TOLD US IF WE COULD FIND A WAY THERE, WE COULD STAY WITH HER. THAT IS HOW WE ENDED UP HERE. WE HAVE A SMALL TWO BEDROOM APARTMENT NOW, BUT ARE STILL STRUGGLING TO MAKE ENDS MEET. OUR FEMA INSPECTION WAS COMPLETELY MESSED UP SO WE GO LITTLE HELP FROM THEM AT FIRST, AND IT TOOK MONTHS TO GET IT FIXED, AND STILL WE DIDNT GET MUCH MORE AFTER THAT. OUR INSURANCE COMPANY PAID NOTHING. MY NEICE HAS SINCE HAD TO MOVE BACK TO MISSISSIPPI, SO WE ARE HERE ALONE WITH ALL OUR FAMILY OVER 1100 MILES AWAY. I DO NOT TALK A LOT ABOUT THE THINGS WE WENT THROUGH BEFORE WE MADE IT HERE, IT CAN BE SO PAINFUL. BUT TO ANY OF THE POWER GUYS THAT WERE STAYING AT THE HOTEL IN MERIDIAN, MS...IF YOU REMEMBER THE FAMILY THAT WAS OUT OF GAS, NO FOOD, WITH A SICK CHILD THAT HAD NOT EATEN ALL DAY AND NO PLACE TO SLEEP....YOU GAVE US GAS TO MAKE IT TO THE NEXT STATION WE COULD FIND THAT WAS OPEN, AND OUR SON ATE THOSE VIENNA SAUSAGES YOU GAVE US LIKE IT WAS THE BEST MEAL HE HAD EVER EATEN, THE SANDWICHES TOO, AND YOU HELPED US AT A TIME WHEN WE WERE COMPLETELY BROKEN AND ASKED NOTHING IN RETURN....I PRAY YOU SEE THIS. I NEVER GOT THE CHANCE TO SAY THANK YOU. I KNOW THAT GOD TOUCHED YOUR HEARTS THAT NIGHT, AND HE WAS THERE PROTECTING US ON OUR LONG JOURNEY. WITHOUT YOUR HELP, WE WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN ABLE TO MAKE IT HERE AND GET OUR SON TO THE DOCTOR SO QUICKLY. SO THANK YOU FOR YOUR KINDNESS TO TOTAL STRANGERS AND A SCREA

I AM NOT REALLY CONCERNED ABOUT PRESENTS FOR MYSELF. MY HUSBAND AND MY MOTHER ARE ADULTS AS WELL AND WE ALL UNDERSTAND THAT CHRISTMAS IS A DAY CELEBRATING OUR SAVIORS BIRTH, NOT ALL ABOUT PRESENTS. MY SON IS FOUR SO HE IS STILL A LITTLE YOUNG TO KNOW THIS YET, ESPECIALLY SINCE HE DOESNT TALK REALLY WELL. OUR MOST DESPERATE PROBLEM AT THIS POINT IS THAT WHEN THEY STOPPED OUR RENTAL ASSISTANCE AFTER THE FIRST FEW MONTHS, MY HUSBAND HAD ONLY JUST BEEN ABLE TO FIND A JOB AND WAS STILL IN TRAINING. WE DIDNT HAVE VERY MUCH INCOME DURING THAT AND THE ONLY WAY TO COVER THE RENT AND UTILITIES WAS TO GET CHECK ADVANCES. I HAVE BEEN PAYING THE INTEREST ON THESE SINCE BECAUSE WE DONT HAVE THE MONEY TO PAY THEM OFF. IT IS TAKING UP A LOT OF OUR INCOME BECAUSE THEY CHARGE BI-WEEKLY. IF I COULD GET THESE PAID, WITH WHAT MY HUSBAND HAS STARTED MAKING NOW, WE WOULD BE OK. SO ANYTHING YOU MAY BE ABLE TO OFFER WOULD HELP, BUT INSTEAD OF GIFTS FOR THE ADULTS, HELP WITH THESE LOANS WOULD BE BETTER. I CAN GIVE YOU THE INFORMATION TO SEND IT DIRECTLY TO THEM SO THAT YOU KNOW IM NOT JUST TRYING TO GET CASH FOR MYSELF. THE ONLY THING I HAVE LEFT OF VALUE IS MY WEDDING SET, AND I WOULD GLADLY SELL THAT TO PAY THESE MYSELF, BUT IT WOULD BREAK MY HUSBANDS (AND MINE) HEART. IF NOTHING ELSE, POSSIBLY A LOAN WITH THE RINGS AS COLLATERAL, BUT WITH OUR CREDIT, NO COMPANY WOULD DO THAT. BUT IT WOULD BE EASIER TO PAY 100 OR 200 A MONTH THAN IT IS TO PAY OVER 600 IN INTERESTS ON THESE. GOD KNOWS I REGRET TAKING THEM IN THE FIRST PLACE, BUT I DIDNT KNOW IT WOULD BE LIKE THIS AND I WAS DESPERATE.

We where in the Superdome for 7 days.  Out of the 7 days there each day was getting harder and harder, not being able to drink and eat anything for 3 days was very hard.  Our hair was damaged from the heat, people where dying each day, people was fighting; children where crying; living was hard.  I saw lots of people lose there mind right infront your face. My grandbaby had fell out due to the heat, the only way he servived passing out was I found a little water in a bottle on the ground to pour on him to wake him up.  He had a bad fever and the only way it broke was I had some asprin in my purse and I broke it in half to give to him.  On the 7th day we were rescued at the convention center by bus.  Thank God Someone Show Up!

we were taken away from the deck of my mother in laws house with a ladder and then put on a boat. it was scary for me that was my first time on a boat. we had stayed in the house for almost 2 weeks. it still feels like it just happened and i havent recovered emotionally. it feels like im an alien because i have not yet adjusted to colorado yet.  maybe its a dream and tommorow ill wake in in new orleans east and order me a hot sausage po-boy. when we got on the plane we didnt know where they were taking us until we bucked our seat belts. then the lady said your going to denver. after getting off the plane i just knew it had to be a dream as we were getting off the plane there were about ten people lined up taking our pictures.

Evacuation Story ... What we still need to help rebuild:MY FAMILY CONSIST OF MY HUSBAND, OUR 5 CHILDREN AND MYSELF. DUE TO THE FINANICAL STRAIN OF EVERYDAY LIVING WE WERE UNABLE TO EVACUATE AND DECIDED THAT WE WOULD LEAVE THE AREA THAT WE RESIDED IN(LOWER 9TH WARD) AND GET A MOTEL ROOM IN A HIGHER PART OF TOWN AND THAT WE WOULD BE SAFE. WELL WE WERE WRONG. WE RODE OUT THE HURRICANE IN OUR MOTEL ROOMS, TAKING A PEEK OUTSIDE FROM TIME TO TIME TO SEE HOW THE CITY WAS WEATHERING THE STORM AND TO OUR DISMAY THINGS APPEARED TO BE GOING FINE. IT WASN'T UNTIL AFTER THAT THINGS TOOK A TURN FOR THE WORST. ABOUT MID-DAY THE WATER IN THE MOTEL BEING TO RISE AND WE NOTICED THAT THE FIRST FLOOR WHERE THE LOBBY WAS, HAD BEGIN TO FLOOD. ABOUT AND HOUR LATER THE WATER WAS MAKING IT'S WAY TO THE SECOND FLOOR OF THE MOTEL. PANICKED AND HORRIFIED WE KNEW THAT WE HAD TO GET OUT, BUT HOW. CALLING 911 WAS NO HELP BECAUSE THE LINES WERE BUSY AND WHEN YOU DID GET AN OPERATOR THEY WERE SAYING THAT NO ONE WAS AVAILABLE TO DO ANY RESCUES BEACUSE THE CITY WAS COMPLETELY UNDER WATER. SO MY HUSBAND, NEPHEWS, BROTHER AND BROTHER-IN-LAW KNEW THAT THEY HAD TO DO SOMETHING. THEY NOTICED THAT THE YARD ACROSS FROM THE MOTEL HAD A BOAT IN IT AND THEY HAD NO OTHER CHOICE, SO THEY TOOK THE BOAT. IN TOTAL IT WAS ABOUT 25 FAMILY MEMBERS THAT WAS RESCUED AND TAKEN TO A NEARBY OVER PASS. AFTER WAITING A FIRE TRUCK NOTICED THAT WE WERE THERE AND TOOK US TO THE SUPERDOME. IN MY PERSONAL OPINION I WOULD HAVE RATHER STAYED ON THE OVERPASS.WE WAITED IN WORRY ABOUT THE MEN I OUR LIVES DUE TO THE FACT THAT THEY ALL DECIDED TO STAY AND GET THE REMAING WOMEN AND CHILDREN OUT OF THE MOTEL.SOME HOW THEY MANAGED TO FIND THERE WAY THROUG THE FLOODED CITY TO THE SUPERDOME AND BACK TO US. WE STAYED IN THAT GOD AWFUL PLACE FOR 4 DAYS. AFTER SLEEPING OUTSIDE ON THE BALCONY OF THE SUPERDOME WAITING FOR BUSES THAT WE NEVER THOUGHT WOULD ARRIVE, I WAS SLOWLY LOSING IT. WHEN THE BUSES CAME WE WERE TAKEN TO HOUSTON WHERE WE WERE TOLD THAT THERE WAS NO MORE ROOM. SO OFF TO DALLAS WE WENT. WE HAVE BEEN HERE FOR A YEAR AND EVEN THOUG

WE HAVE 5 CHILDREN RANGING IN AGES 14-4. WE USUALLY ARE ABLE TO GIVE THEM A GOOD CHRISTMAS. WE FIND THAT DUE TO THE FINANICAL STRAIN THAT THE HURRICANE HAS PLACED ON US WE MAY NOT BE ABLE TO. OUR ONLY WISH FOR CHRISTMAS THIS YEAR IS THAT OUR CHILDREN ENJOY THEMSELVES.

My family have experienced some of the most horrified things in our lives after the storm. my son evacuated to the New Orleans Convention Center with his aunt. They boardcast over the radio that buses will be located there but, none showed up. When the buses showed up poeple were fighting to get on and they drove off. until this day my son describes how the bathrooms were filled with a disgusting smell, stampeeds, very hungery, got sick, and even saw an elder male drop dead. My boyfriend got a gun pulled on him because he was smoking a cigerrite. This day still gives my family nightmares and stressful times every now and then.

We ran out of food and water had to walk to the interstate to get us to the Convention Center stayed there for 3 days. Then were rescued and air lifted to the Airport.Stayed there for 2 days and went to 5 different States before returning Home to Louisiana.

Daily I thank God for all that I have and been through. Some say the Hurricane tore there lives apart. But for me it caused me to live.On 4-18-06 my husband died and so did I. Katrina  forced me to live and take care of myself and 2 kids.I firmly believe God blesses us inspite of who we are and what we go through. So for all who may see this I pray that God Bless you this day and forever more.

My mother and family had went to another hotel in the french quarters.  It was like about five indivual families within our group and everybody had children under 10 yrs old.  All together it was  12 adults and 15 children.  Anyways, we were ok until the water started raising.  All the men that was there had to go acroos the street and break loose a boat that was locked to the ground while the females and kids stayed in the rooms.  By the time they got the boat the water was high almost over our heads.  So we had to carry the kids on our necks to get on the boat.  Once we loaded up we waited on the bridge until a fire truck came got us and brought us to the superdome. when we got to the superdome the men stayed behind and cleared out 3 hotels of elderly, sick ,etc.  We was in the superdome for 5 days, One without the guys.  Then the families started splitting up.  They couldn't take being in the dome and the ones who had two many kids to carry stayed.  Then when it was time to get on the bus i saw my mother and sisters and found out that they made it they came with us.  We all stood in the hot sun for 13hrs to get on the bus.  I almost passed out and my 3 yr old son had passed out thats how i got to get on the bus.  His dad had left to go help his mother.  Out of the members who were left had done got split up because some went to Houston and some went to Dallas. We all had to find a way to get to each other.  When we did we all slept in the convention center for about a week and a half.  then we all moved in some apartments that tried to take advantage of use.  They tried to take evertything we got from f.e.m.a. We didn't won't to give it to them so they put us out.  I had my baby on 11-01-05 and i had a c- section. The day i got out the hospital, I went to Houston to get a

We evacuated the Saturday before Katrina. We were very blessed in that we had somewhere to go. My mother had just been realeased from the hospital and was recovering from bypass surgery. As with a lot of other people, we assumed that everything would be okay and that we would return home and life would be the same as before. How wrong we all were!! Everything was lost. Yet, thank God we still had each other. Although, it has been a year, we are all still dealing with the after effects of Katrina, mentally, emotionally and finacially.

I would like to say, "Thank-you to everyone who has given from their hearts to the ones that have been affected from Hurricane Katrina. May God bless you

There was also 26 tress down on the trailer and the rest of the property. We stayed in a tent for several weeks until we cleaned up enough and got electricity back. We were unable to salvage anything out of our home in Chalmette as we had approx 5 feet of water and oil from the oil spill. We had no insurance and have gotten some limited help from fema.I have just recently found a part time job delivering

I really don't want anything for myself but some help for me to get something for my kids for x-mas would sure help

We went from Baton Rouge to the Astrodome in Houston. A volunteer was looking for us and just so happened my daughter's grandmother knew where we were located. We re united with the rest of the family in Atlanta,Georgia.

This experience extremely scary for my children as well as myself. We had every intention to leave home before the storm got too bad,but by the time we were able to leave we had been placed on curfew and were unable to leave home. The water was coming under the doors and the windows were leaking. The power was out for about a week.We had limited food ,water,& supplies. The majority of the food spoiled because of how long the power was out. This was honestly the hardest time of my life.I am a single parent and it's already hard enough to take care of my children under normal circumstances, but this made me feel almost hopeless.

We gladly appreciate any help from whomever chooses to adopt our family.Any help is better than no help at all

Evacuation Story ... What we still need to help rebuild:

It is never easy to lose all that you pose and wait for someone else to give you a mere 3rd back of your life’s possessions. Hurricane Katrina took my family through the ends. I myself am disabled unable to work because of my chronic fibromyalgia, arthritis, diabetes, and a herniated disk in my neck. I depend on my children to care for me for all that my disability doesn’t cover. We all lived in a three bedroom house in Coden, AL right off the Alabama Gulf Coast; my daughter Erin and her two daughters, my son Louis, and my other daughter Oretta who is in college. When Katrina hit we received about 6 ft of flood water in the house. Everything we owned was destroyed. My youngest daughter who is college lost the majority of her clothing and college books. As a mother, it hurt even more when you’re not able to provide for your child.

Between having no money, several months my son and daughter were out of work, being rejected by the government every time you turned around, trying to keep from being scammed by people you thought we suppose to help you, Hurricane Katrina changed more lives for the worst. The lived below sea level, so when Katrina was near land we had a mandatory evacuation of our area. We went from hotels to relatives. With my medical needs and my youngest granddaughter’s asthma, having no electricity wasn’t an option.

I can say that the Lord has blessed my family with an apartment and our lives. Though it is still hard, and we among many who can not rebuild are still fighting to get things back to the way they were. I must say that my granddaughters should me everyday, with their sweet laughter, that you can’t stop living because things in your life are on hold.

It is people who support that angle tree and many efforts alike that makes life and the holidays happen. To God Be The Glory.

Evacuation Story ... What we still need to help rebuild:

We did not evacuate for Hurricane Katrina. We stood behind in my second floor apartment thinking we would be safe. Unfortunately, I was wrong. During Katrina, we made out ok until the water begin rising. The water started to rise over my first floor and I knew I had to some how get the kids out of the apartment. Everyone was crying, we were all scared. My neighbor next door hollered for us to come to her house because she had a third floor apartment and it was much higher. I couldn't swim, but I managed to get the kids out one at a time. I broke down a door in my apartment to float next door. The flood waters came all the way up to the second floor and there was no escape. The next day it was worse. All the food began to sour and there was little to no drinking water. I was scared for the children. Jareal's asthma machine and medicine was in my apartment under water. The water was not going down. There were helicopters flying around with their news cameras, videotaping, but not helping. Screams from blocks away, I knew people were suffering. To make a very long story short, we were rescued after 3 days by boat. We were taken to a bridge where we were later bussed to the Astrodome in Houston. We stood in the Astrodome for 2 days and I then brought the kids to a hotel and we stayed for 4 weeks until I found a apartment.

It has been so hard for me during this past year. It's hard to come to grips with reality. I need the help of you and others, to help me provided the kids a Christmas. The kids went without Christmas last year. I'm now disabled and receiving SSI, but I attend school part time. Please help us for Christmas!

Evacuation Story ... What we still need to help rebuild:

We lost our home, vehicle and everything we owned in Katrina's devastation in 2005.  Like many other families, FEMA's actions and promises fell through the cracks and our family received no help.  Only promises of help.  Well, after my fiance's job shut down due to severe damage to the business and loss of money, we sat down and made the drastic and last minute decision to move somewhere we might be able to get back on our feet.  So, we loaded up what little we salvaged and moved to Lafayette, LA.  It has been hard because finding a place to live was like finding a needle in the haystack.  We finally found a place.  It was a 2 bedroom, 1 bath mobile home.  We are crammed into this small place, but we have managed to make it feel like home.  I must admit that I was hurt and angry after the storm, but after seeing what the people of New Orleans had to deal with, I know that my family and I are blessed. We give all praise to God for sparing our lives.  We strongly believe that He has a purpose for us.  We have a mission to let the people know what He means in our lives.  I think that Hurricane Katrina was an eye-opener  for the people of the world to see that in the end we still have to look back to Him.

For all the people that have reached out from near and far to help the people that have suffered and are still suffering from Katrina's wrath, you are a blessing and you will be rewarded.  Thank you from our family.
