We left New Orleans, Sunday August 28, 2005. Stayed on the road 15 hours couldn't find a hotel. So we found a church that welcomed us. We slept on the floor for two nights, then we stayed @ the cajun dome for three weeks. Later we ended @ a motel 6 for one month, then stayed @ the Quality Inn for four months. Then FEMA paid our for the apt we now live in. We needed houses to own for my sister and her children and my son and I. help us, please pray for us to prosper and learn to do well. |

Story ... What we still need to help rebuild:
We left home on Sunday,August 28,2005 driving in the traffic with three days of changing clothes thinking we would be returning home soon. After 13 hours of driving in the rain we stoping at every hotel along the highway with no luck until we reached Lake Charles Harrah's Casino Hotel. This was one time I was happy to go to the the casino with my mother who is a Platium Card member. This was the only reason why we were able to get a room. We stayed in the hotel while seeking permit housing for our family. We put a deposit down on an apartment in the Lake Charles area a two weeks before Hurricane Rita hit and everyone was advised they had to flee the casino hotel for the second time searching for shelter. |

Story ... What we still need to help rebuild:
My husband and I were fortunate enough to evacuate New Orleans on the day prior to Katrina and the levee breakages. However, we had very little money. He was furloughed from his job 4 years short of retirement; we couldn't afford to maintain his insurance coverage. We've gotten some help from FEMA and some from Musicares, a foundation for musicians, that has sustained us until now. I have not received any job offers; however, my husband is working a part-time job (25 hours/week at $9/hr). It's not enough to sustain us but we're going forward in prayer. Any help will be appreciated. God Bless. Requesting help with our rent at $825.00, or medications, or utilities, or auto insurance. Would like to rebuild our home in New Orleans, but no financial resources are available. |

I evacuated the Saturday before Katrina because they compare it to Hurricane Besty the storm I lost my 31 year old husband. I was 24 years old left with 5 kids ages 9-5. We lived in the attic for 1 week after his death. This time 12 of us lived in my daughters' house for 2 months then in a hotel for 4 months. In February of 2005 I paid off my house after 30 years and then Katrina hit and I lost it plus it push me in to early retirement. Now my life has changed forever. Thanks Vivian Williams Yesterday I got my mammogram test back and they saw something on my test please keep me in your prayers. Vivian Williams

Evacuated day before Katrina, with very items, leaving better, but smaller car behind. Experience placed my mother in a totally dependant state. I worked for 2 months before having to stop to take care of my mother. My mother is not eligible for social security benefits, so we have to pay $481.50/mo. for medicare benefits. My son came to live with us after his surgery to recover. I can't work and take care of my mother and ailing son. My health presently would make it impossible right now anyway. I was placed on unpaid leave on 02/05/06. I recently received a notice stating that my employment ended 3/14/006. |

Story ... What we still need to help rebuild:
My evacuation was a trauma for me.
I went to Beaumont Texas and then had to leave Beaumont Texas for
Rita. I was in and out of 5
different Hotels with the FEMA registration when it kicked in and we
paid $900.00 of hotel fees until we were able to find an apartment in
which I am still at this resident a year now.
I am working for TEMP Service which is a blessing but I am still
in need of assistance with medical needs, food needs and also a
permenent job. It is so
hard moving from place to place and starting all over again, away from
family members. I missed all of my grandchildren, family members and my State
Job. But I do thank GOD for me still being alive. I am just too afraid to go back where I was born all my life
due to the killing and no where to live due to jacking up rent.
It is still hard at times but I just pray to GOD for my strenght
and health. I thank you in advance for whatever assistance that can be of help. Please pray that things get better for me and my family. I have additional grandchildren that needs assistance also but they are in New Orleans with their mom whom went to drugs. I cannot assist them because I am struggling with myself. |

Evacuation
Story ... What we still need to help rebuild:
My fiance and I are evacuees of Katrina. We stayed in a hotel the night of the hurricane concerned with financial disabilities. From there we were evacuated to the Louisiana Superdome and from ther to the Convention Center for 5 days. After noticing an extreme amount of death we started to question our lives. From there we started a journey towards Interstate 10 where we were not alarmed of the amount of water. We then had to break down an iron fence to retrieve a boat. Not realizing where any of our family were we were startled. Having no food or clean water for days at a time was devastating. We then proceeded of to the evacuation process where the coast guard was a great help. We traveled from boat-bus-plane-bus-plane-bus, to Memphis,Baton Rouge,Austin,San Antonio,Houston, Atlanta, Macon, Nashville, Pine Bluff,Dallas, Little Rock.Basically all across the southern united states. Now finding shelter in Dallas we are becoming a better family realizing how ,many lives were lost and how much we lost, but have to be thankful for. We appreciate everything that has been done for us thus far and pray that we can soon get our lives back together. Please help a well deserving family remember the good times of the BIG EASY!!! |

We left New Orleans 2 days before Katrina hit in an effort to keep ourselves and my husbands parents safe. My husbands parents were able to return to their home in the New Orleans area, but ours had over 6 ft of water in it. We are still waiting for FEMA to inspect the home so that we can try to rebuild our lives, thou at this point we doubt that they ever will. Although, we have tried to move on from the devastation of Katrina, we still are unable to find work in the area we are in. |

Story ... What we still need to help rebuild:
MY HUSBAND AND MYSELF ALONG WITH OUR DAUGHTER WHO HAD JUST TURNED 1 A FEW WEEKS BEFORE STAYED AT A FAMILY MEMBERS HOUSE. AS THE WATER RUSHED IN I MANAGED TO GRAB ALL OF THE BAGS THAT I HAD PACKED FOR HER WITH THE ESSENTIALS, I.E. DIAPERS, JUICE, BABY FOOD ETC, BEFORE WE CLIMBED INTO THE ATTIC. WHEN WE CLIMBED INTO THE ATTIC I WAS HOLDING ALL THE BAGS AND MY DAUGHTER WITH WATER TO MY CHEST. IT SEEMED THAT WE WERE IN THE ATTIC FOREVER. IT WAS HOT, WE WERE SCARED THAT WE MAY NOT MAKE IT, ALL I COULD DO WAS PRAY HOLD MY BABY AND TELL HER I WAS SORRY FOR NOT LEAVING. LIKE OTHERS WE THOUGHT WE WOULD BE OK SINCE WE WERE IN WHAT WAS CONSIDERED ONE OF THE HIGHEST POINTS IN BAY ST. LOUIS. NEEDLESS TO SAY WE LEARNED A VERY VALUABLE LESSON AND LEARNED JUST HOW EASY THINGS CHANGE. I HOPE THAT OUR DAUGHTERS, NOR ANYONE ELSE, EVER HAS TO EXPERIENCE ANYTHING LIKE THIS AGAIN. IF SOMEONE CHOOSES TO ADOPT OUR FAMILY PLEASE KNOW IN ADVANCE THAT WE ARE TRULY GRATEFUL. WE ARE IN THE PROCESS OF REBUILDING, IT IS TAKING TIME AND PATIENCE BUT WE ARE GETTING THERE. OUR GOAL WAS HAVE OUR CHILDREN IN OUR HOME BY CHRISTMAS BUT THAT PROBABLY WON'T HAPPEN, HOWEVER WE ARE GRATEFUL THAT ALTHOUGH IT MAY NOT BE THE GREATEST WE DO ATLEAST HAVE A ROOF OVER OUR HEADS AND MOST OF ALL WE HAVE EACH OTHER. GOD BLESS YOU. |

staying right behind the casino hotel about a block behind the beach. We
had been through hurricanes before and we didn't evacuate. We saw the
water move in but it stopped at the drive way. That treasure bay resort
is what saved us. The next day we saw the devastation and was in tears.
We couldn't find our families or get to our homes. After about five days
of no bathing, heat, waiting in line for hours for food and ice, and not
having a meal, we finally got gas after a 5 hour wait and a friend's
family drove out to take us to atlanta. well when we got to pensacola,
they left us stranded. fortunately, we found a hotel to stay at that red
cross paid for.

Evacuation
Story ... What we still need to help rebuild:
I was in the hospital in New Orleans and released two days prior to Hurricane Katrina and I was informed that I needed to leave New Orleans. I left the city on Sunday, the day before the hurricane hit the city. I evacuated to Rowlett, Texas to stay with my sister. We were able to stay with her for a week and then we went to the Comfort Suites hotel in the area. I was able to receive assistance from FEMA and I was also able to rent an apartment in which I am still occupying. At this time I am currently in the hospital in Dallas, TX. I am at Baylor Hospital. I had to have an emergency vascular surgery that had to be done to correct a surgery that I had in New Orleans in 2001. I would appreciate any assistance your organization can give me. Thank you and God Bless you. |

Story ... What we still need to help rebuild:
I left the city with my two girls on Sunday, the day before the hurricane hit the city. My husband had to stay in the city to work. We vacated our home and went to Rowlett, TX. where we are still living. We hope to return at the end of the year. We stayed with relatives at first and then we went to a local hotel and now we are living in an apartment. We would appreciate any assistance that you can help us with. |

Story ... What we still need to help rebuild:
I left the city on Sunday, the day before Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans. I evacuated the city with my mother in route to Rowlett Tx to stay with my sister. We only left with a few items with the belief that we would return a few days later. We left with very little money and necessities. We stayed with my sister for two weeks and then we stayed at a local hotel for two weeks before we were able to get assistance from FEMA to find us a rental home. We are still living in a rental home in Rowlett, Tx., in hopes of returning home in the near future. I would appreciate any assistance you have available. Thank you for your kind consideration. |
