Story ... What we still need to help rebuild:
I left New Orleans on August 26, 2005, with my entire family (35 members). We traveled all night to Houston Texas where we stayed in a Hotel until told that we could not return. We then, the entire family, went to a shelter in Kingwood Texas, Kingwood Methodist Church. I then started looking for work and begin working for Kelly Temp services on September 10, 2005. I then moved into some apartments close by, where I am still resideing today. |

Evacuation
Story ... What we still need to help rebuild:
my experience for
evacuating was not as bad as others. it actually took me 17 1/2 hours of
driving with relatives to buffalo, texas. upon our arrival i fell asleep
behind the wheel of my friends vehicle and wreck her car by running into
my father-in-laws car. by this time i am panicing because i have no
money to pay for damages for these vehicles. while living on the ranch
in buffalo texas family memebers began to argue and pressure has start
busting pipes when everyone was working on each others nerves. we were
all depressed to watch the news and see that we were no longer able to
return home. by this time i realize that i had no money saved to support
myself as well as my children. we only had 3 days of clothing and no
where to live. i had no job, and my mom pasted 6 months before the storm
had hit. now this time my pressure is up because i have no clue of what
to do where to began. all i did for the next week was cry. my children
had start dhyrating we were limited on food. all i could think of is
"how" how will i make it. finally i received my first phone
call from my one of my sisters that was so emotionally for me. then they
all started calling one after the other. that had my spirit lifted.
finally my ex husband mom called and informed me of my apartment where i
am living now of vacancies. i was able to get this apartment thru dallas
housing. and met this guy and he adopted my family and brought me
everything you could possibly name yes even a car. this guy even got me
a job where i only lasted for 1 month after being discriminating
against. now i am working thru a temp agency and was informed on 10-30
that my assignment will end on 11-3. to me its like i am back to square
two. because i now have a place to live but now will soon be with out a
job.

FOR 4 DAYS AFTER KATRINA HIT WITH NO WATER, NO FOOD, AND NO SINCE OF
HOPE ON LIFE ITSELF. MY KIDS WERE IN HOUSTON WITH FAMILY AND LOOKING AT
THE THINGS I HAD SEEN FIRST HAND ON THE NEWS THEY THOUGHT I WAS DEAD. I
PRAYED EVERYDAY AND ASK GOD TO HELP US THROUGH THE SITUATION WE WERE IN
AT THE HOSPITAL AND THEY WERE ANSWERED. WE WERE RESCUED BY BOATS, HAD TO
WALK THROUGH WATER UP TO OUR NECKS WHEN THE BOATS GAVE OUT. LATTER I WAS
ABLE TO GET ON A CHOPPER THAT TOOK US TO THE CAUSEWAY BRIDGE. BY THE
GRACE OF GOD I WAS ABLE TO GET ON A BUS THE THAT TOOK ME TO MY KIDS IN
HOUSTON WHERE WE WERE REUNITED. I HAVE NIGHTMARES AND STILL CRY
SOMETIMES WHEN I LOOK AT MY KIDS AND THINK OF WHAT THEY HAD TO GO
THROUGH WITHOUT ME, AND WONDERING IF I WOULD EVER SEE THEM AGAIN TRYING
TO REMEMBER WHEN I LAST TOLD THEM HOW MUCH I LOVED THEM.

We evacuated to
Huston where we all stayed at a friends house, my apartment was flooded
and on the 2nd floor we had roof damage, I was able to salvage my
refridgerator for a while and then it broke.
One of my daughter assisted me in getting signed up for FEMA, she
stayed in Louisiana but evacuated to a different city we lost
communication for a little while. I
was not insured so FEMA took care of the minimals and some repairs,
while the building was insured for outside the things that we lost that
FEMA didn't cover with the amounts they gave me has been replaced
slowly. I have carpel tunel
in both of my hands and am under medical supervision and while God has
helped me to be able to maintain my family togeher.

Evacuation
Story ... What we still need to help rebuild:
We left the sunday before Katrina at 7:00 AM with reservations I had made in Dallas Texas, When we got to the I-10 we entered the wrong counterflow lane and headed towards Mississippi, when we realize there was no turning back anywhere, with the guidance of God we took some back roads and from Natchez we went down to Alexandria. When whe got to the city the girls were tired and crying because we had been on the road for 6 hours straight. When we pulled up to a Hotel downtow I walked in and was told that there were no availabilities at all but on the outskirts of the city there were other hotels. I think we went to 8 of them and ended up back at the one where I went in first. I decided to go back in to the Hotel and ask someone else I prayed and hoped that there would be someone that might help. By this time the girls decided to get out of the car with me because they were so tire. I approached another person who looked at our desparation and said to let her see what she could do and to come back in an hour. After the hour she told us she had a room with one bed and we could have it for the night. I was blessed. God watched over us while everyday at 10:00 am we had to go talk to the receptionist to see if they would be able to extend our stay for the night, we did this for about a week or more. When we returned home to see how things were on labor day weekend we came to hard grip on the devastation caused by the storm we lost everything but our hope in restoration and all do we are still living in a trailer and have completed our home to 95% Our family is together and full of hope working towards our goals and living each day full of love and appreciation for eachother, family and friends, also for those who have done so much for our community. |

I am a 30 year
oold single parent of two boys ages 2 and 6.
At the present time, I am currently expecting another son in
approximately 2 weeks. My evacuation plan has been horrific. My kids and I evacuated from New Orleans to Lake Charles,
only to have to evacuate to again.
We had settled in Lake Charles, only to have to lose everything
due to Hurricane Rita. FEMA
and the Red Cross were to no avail because their stipulations are you
can not receive assistance for more than one disaster if you are
currently being assisted for another regardless to if you loose
everything again. The up side is I have been attending school in
Memphis, so I will be able to better my condtion for my kids and myselt.
I would just like assistance in whatever capacity so that mu kids
can have a good holiday season.

Evacuation
Story ... What we still need to help rebuild:
Well I wasn't one
that was able to evacuate. And I sure wasn't going to bring my family to
the Superdome or the Convention Center, and Thank God I didn't.After
being shipwrecked by Katrina and thrown off the face of the earth, well
this is what it felt like, after 5 or 6 days my nephew Anthony (Boogie)Ferrand
said we got to do something. These people are not trying to rescue us,so
we got to rescue ourselves. So he left floating on a door, saying he was
going to find a boat. And by the grace of God that is exactly what he
did,he got some more men to help him. He said I don't care how long it
takes but we are going to rescue all the women and children first. Then
we'll come back for the men.And when I said this young man pulled this
off. I was so proud of him. They took us to St. Mary's not too far from
where we were, a few blocks up. What I seen broke my heart.I seen bodies
floating in the water.Everythint was under water,I cried looking at the
devastation. We had to get off the boat into all that funky stinky filthy
black water up to our necks, then climb I don't know how many flights of
stairs. It was many.I looked at my children and my heart sunk at the
looks on their faces. It tore at me like a thousand daggers. We reached
the top of the roof of the school. We stayed up there for a night and a
half when finally we were acknowledged.I knew one thing people were
going to be desperate to get off that roof to safer and better
grounds. So I told my children don't get into any fights trying to leave
off this roof.Stay around me and we will be patient. We were the last
crew to go,A big army helicopter with the 2 perpellers came to get us.My
children loved it. I was crying, but not from being scared but that we
were leaving.I cried because it was finally over and I must say that God
sent angels to come and get us because they were all so considerate of
what we had been through,They never uttered a harsh word. All I kept
hearing them say is you are safe now. We got you.And I said Thank you
Lord, Thank you.

Details of my Evacuation Experience: Well let me say
that August 29, 2005 will be with us for the rest of our lives. It was
truly a day of destruction in all our lives. It was total devastation. We
were rescued by an army helicopter.I was so glad to see them.My children
was tired, intimidated and so disappointed at what was happening and what
they were witnessing. They wanted their grandma. And they thought we were
abandoning their grandmother, uncles and aunt. But I tried to explain to
them that by us being in two different areas we can't go and get
them. That these people will rescue them too.But they were scared for
them because of where they were. They were below sea level. I was so
afraid for my mother, brothers, sister and my son Cedric was with them. But
we all found each other.Thank God.This is something that won't go
away. It's hard to forget that you were being forgotten.Right here in
America? No! Not seeing them rush to the aides of others in other
countries, and not be able to take care of their own. That hurts. But
through it all we were blessed by the Grace and Mercy of God.And He
saved us by His promises.

Evacuation
Story ... What we still need to help rebuild:
I stayed in my house through the storm. When the water reached the top of my steps, we were rescued by a passer by boat and taken to a school in the area. There we were until the following Sataurday when we were helicoptered to the airport. There my baby got sick with asthma and had to be put on a ventilator, and they sent us on a plane to Korpus Christy, TX. From there we went on a greyhoundbus to Houston where we had relatives. We stayed there until we went back to New Orleans late December of last year. |
